Talking Boxing with SECHEW POWELL
THU May 5, BRIAN SKJOLD - “I fight for the fans. I want to be the people’s champ!” :: In his own mind, Sechew “Iron Horse” Powell feels he’s already the man at junior middleweight and thus far in his career he has yet to let the fans down. “I consider myself the uncrowned junior middleweight champion of the world…I won’t stop until I’m crowned.”

But, on May 6 the undefeated prospect will face his toughest challenge to date when he meets the equally undefeated Cornelius “K9” Bundrage. This match-up will be the main event on Showtime’s growing ShowBox series, at the Foxwood Resort Casino in Mashantucket, CT. Powell comes into this fight sporting a 15-0 record with 9 KO’s, while his counterpart Cornelius Bundrage boasts an impressive 21-0 ledger with 13 KO’s. As it’s been said many times before, somebody’s “0” has got to go. With that being said, Sechew Powell plans on keeping his 0 and introducing Cornelius Bundrage to a whole new level of boxing.

“He’s never been in the ring with a fighter like me. I’m well rounded. I can box, punch, move. I have finesse to my game. I’m the type of fighter he’s never seen in all his 21 fights. He needs to look out for everything. He’s going to need to step his game up 10 notches, maybe 100.”

Although Bundrage is 21-0, he comes into this fight as the lesser known commodity. This kind of situation can be an unnerving experience for the other fighter, but Powell is coming into this fight mentally and physically prepared for any road blocks he may come across.

“I’m coming in in good shape. I’ve trained at a well-rounded training camp. I don’t know what to expect from this guy. I didn’t get an opportunity to study him very much, so I’m just expecting anything. I’m prepared for whatever this guy brings to me.”

Once again Showtime has put together another great match-up for the fans. Two young, hungry undefeated fighters, ready to toe the line and go to war. Sechew Powell sees the significance of this fight and its potential.

“I just want everybody to tune in on May 6, because there’s going to be a lot of fireworks. There’s going to be an old-fashioned gun fight! He’s never lost before. I’ve never lost before. And, that promises to be very exciting.”

A win in this fight, by either fighter, will do nothing but good for their respective careers. Powell already considers himself the uncrowned champ and feels he’s only a few short steps from the top.

“I think after this fight, I should be in the top ten. My skills and my background merit me being a top ten fighter right now. After this fight everyone is going to notice who Sechew is.”

Along with notoriety, comes the opportunity to fight other established fighters and the chance to prove your dominance. Powell is yearning for that one chance and that one fighter to vault himself to the top.

“I would love to fight Fernando Vargas. I think he is a warrior and a well-respected junior middleweight fighter. And, I think he would be the best person for me to prove myself against. If I could prove myself against a fighter like Fernando Vargas, I would get the acclaim I am looking for in this division.”

Boasting an immeasurable confidence and unparalleled charisma, Sechew Powell feels he offers even a little bit more to the sport of boxing.

“I think I offer a lot of style, finesse, skill, movement, the sweet science. Things that the game is built around. I consider myself a cross between Pernell Whitaker and Marvin Hagler. I see myself as the boxer’s boxer.”

Powell is on his way to the top, with great management, trainers and promotion behind him. And now with the added exposure on Showtime, the sky is truly the limit. Sechew doesn’t take the opportunities he’s gotten for granted, and voices his appreciation.

“Showtime has brought me back for a third time. I’m thrilled to box on their show again, especially in the main event. I’m very honored they would even use me for a third time and make me the main event. A lot of big ups to Showtime, those guys are real good to me.”

Make sure to tune in this Friday night to see the uncrowned junior middleweight champ hold court.
