THU May 5, ANDRES CARRIEDO - "My goal is to look good in the fight and win impressively" :: Promising, 24-year old, junior middleweight Yuri Foreman is coming off a February 24th domination over Jesus Soto, scoring a 8-round unanimous decision. The undefeated Russian is scheduled to fight Kevin Cagle this Friday night on Showtime's 'ShoBox: The Next Generation' in what will be his first scheduled 10-round bout.
TalkingBoxing.com caught up with this rising star before his showdown.
TalkingBoxing: How has everything been going for this fight? Yuri Foreman: It’s been good. I’m just going to work out a little bit in the evening and we’ll be done.
TalkingBoxing: How did training go?
Yuri Foreman: It was very, very tough...I had a lot of very good sparring with Jerson Ravelo, Oscar Diaz, Kendall Holt and Raymond Biggs.
TalkingBoxing: What was it like sparring with Jerson Ravelo for this camp? Does he have a fight scheduled soon?
Yuri Foreman: Right now he is waiting, but he’s already in shape. He’s a big guy. We went at it the last two days on Sunday and Monday. Both days we sparred for eight rounds.
TalkingBoxing: Did you think either of you won that?
Yuri Foreman: We both were fighting hard just going around with each other. So, it’s hard to say...We were just hitting each other with some bombs. It was a lot of fun (laughs).
TalkingBoxing: Ok you’re scheduled to fight Kevin Cagle on Friday. What do you know about him?
Yuri Foreman: He’s pretty fast; he has pretty quick hands. I guess he has good punching power because he has 12 KOs out of 16. He likes to fight more; he’s not a boxer, he like to fight on the inside.
TalkingBoxing: Have you been watching tapes of him?
Yuri Foreman: Yeah.
TalkingBoxing: Who would you compare him to?
Yuri Foreman: I couldn’t really compare him to anyone. I don’t know.
TalkingBoxing: What are your goals for this fight? Obviously, you want to win, but do you have any other goals for Friday?
Yuri Foreman: My goal is to be victorious on May 6th and also to look good. There’s going to be a lot of people watching because the fight will be on Showtime. So, my goal is to look good in the fight and win impressively.
TalkingBoxing: Where do you see your career going within the next year?
Yuri Foreman: I want to be a contender.
TalkingBoxing: Is there anyone in particular that you’re aiming for?
Yuri Foreman: I don’t want anybody in particular I’ll fight anybody, you know. Whoever my matchmaker Johnny Burns matches me with, you know. He knows what he’s doing so a year from now I feel like I can fight anybody. There’s no particular name. I really don’t care.
TalkingBoxing: How does it feel fighting on Showtime? Do you get nervous or is it just like any other fight?
Yuri Foreman: A little bit more than average you know. It’s a big opportunity and I’m very anxious. I really can’t wait. I’ve been already counting days for three weeks.
TalkingBoxing: Is there anything else that you’d like to say?
Yuri Foreman: I want to thank all of my sparring partners; Jerson Ravelo, Oscar Diaz, Kendall Holt and all my fans for helping me out.
TalkingBoxing: Thank you, Yuri we appreciate you taking the time out to do this interview. Talking Boxing you good luck and I wish you good luck.
Yuri Foreman: Thank you.
