Talking Boxing with JEFF LACY
"I will be crowned the Super Middleweight Champion"

by Santiago Rodriguez

8/29 - Just days away from a huge fight on Showtime at the Amphitheatre at Caesars Palace on October 2nd, young super-middleweight contender Jeff "Left Hook" Lacy caught up with our own Santiago Rodriguez to discuss his upcoming vacant title shot against IBF #1 ranked Syd Vanderpool. Lacy, who loves his home at Wild Card gym in Los Angeles, just needed to get away from it all to focus on his biggest showdown to date. "I couldn't relax when I was home in L.A, where I was on the constant go. My mind was racing all the time I couldn't settle down, not that anything bad happened there [Wild Card Gym], I just felt that I needed to be someplace to really focus."

And it's Vegas where Lacy got his focus and sparred with one of boxing's best southpaw's in order to get comfortable with Vanderpool's stance. "I got great sparring," said Lacy. "Winky Wright can't get any better than that. He is actually getting ready for Mosley. He is going to stop him this time, or make him quit." Read on for much more with Jeff.

JEFF LACY

Santiago Rodriguez: What's new, Jeff, how's training going?

Jeff Lacy: It's good, going perfect, got great sparring; Winky Wright can't get any better than that. He is actually getting ready for Mosley. He is going to stop him this time, or make him quit, but he will stop him.

Santiago Rodriguez: You're down in Florida training now. When I last saw you it was at Wild Card, why the move?

Jeff Lacy: I am in Vegas now, altitude 2500 feet. We left a while ago just want to get myself prepared for the fight. I wasn't comfortable with the surroundings at Wild Card. I couldn't relax when I was home in L.A, where I was on the constant go. My mind was racing all the time I couldn't settle down not that anything bad happened there, I just felt that I needed to be someplace to really focus.

Santiago Rodriguez: Your fight coming up against Syd Vanderpool, what do you think Vanderpool will bring to the table?

Jeff Lacy: I think he is a good physical fighter, good hand speed, technical, quick, this is going define me as a fighter and a champion.

Santiago Rodriguez: This is a world title fight your first do you feel any pressure on yourself to not only win but look good?

Jeff Lacy: I don't feel pressure. Sometimes styles makes fight this fight is suited for my style it depends on what vanderpool comes. If he comes to run and not fight for a world title, it's tough, but I think and hope he is ready to fight. I mean if you don't fight for a title what will you fight for?

Santiago Rodriguez: Some fighters at super-middle, Scott Pemberton and Charles Brewer. I will start with Brewer, we did an interview with him a while back and he wasn't too happy with the idea of you and Vanderpool getting a shot what are your thoughts on that?

Jeff Lacy: We tried to fight [Charles] Brewer and he turned us down that is why the IBF is doing what they are doing. I try to fight a lot of guys in the top five but they don't want to fight. At least I am willing to take any of them in the top five but they didn't want to fight this is why we have the vacant title shot.

Santiago Rodriguez: Would you fight Brewer after winning the title?

Jeff Lacy: I wouldn't look past him if the money was there. I will fight him. He didn't want to fight me before he turned me down.

Santiago Rodriguez: Now on to Scott you two have sparred before how did that go?

Jeff Lacy: Scott is a nice, strong, technical fighter. We worked very well together. I am glad we sparred to be the best, you have to train with the best.

Santiago Rodriguez: I spoke with Scott the other day and he said he would love a fight with you in a defense would that be something your up for?

Jeff Lacy: Of course I would love to give him a shot at the title, if I can help him in anyway I would.

Santiago Rodriguez: Out of the two names there Brewer and Pemberton who would you rather fight?

Jeff Lacy: When it comes down to it, if I am looking to take $500,000 for Brewer and $200,000 for Pemberton who would you take?

Santiago Rodriguez: With Bernard Hopkins just getting his win over Oscar De La Hoya, there have also been talks of a catch weight bout between Roy Jones Jr. and Hopkins at 168. Would you like to fight the winner of that fight should it come off?

Jeff Lacy: Oh yes. I would love to fight either one of those guys. I wanted to grab the title here and go down and fight Hopkins. I would also love to go up and fight at 175 and challenge there.

Santiago Rodriguez: There is also speculation of a Antonio Tarver-Hopkins show down would you like the winner of that?

Jeff Lacy: of course.

Santiago Rodriguez: Who do you think would win that fight?

Jeff Lacy: I would have to say Tarver, he is the bigger stronger guy.

Santiago Rodriguez: How do you rate the performance of Hopkins?

Jeff Lacy: Umm, in that fight I don't know if it was his game plan, but Hopkins didn't impress me in that fight. Well he did on how he finished, but for being the man P4P, in the beginning he didn't impress me as to what I expected.

Santiago Rodriguez: Do you think he toyed with Oscar in the fight?

Jeff Lacy: I don't think so it was probably his game plan he just waited for Oscar to get tired past the sixth, seventh round. He didn't do what I thought he would do in the first half of the fight.

Santiago Rodriguez: What is your goal in boxing? Who do you want to fight what do you want to accomplish in the sport?

Jeff Lacy: Not who. I am fighting to become undisputed middle supper middle and lt heavyweight.

Santiago Rodriguez: Any predictions for the fight?

Jeff Lacy: My prediction is I am taking the win. I will be crowned the Super Middleweight Champion.

Santiago Rodriguez: Thanks again champ. As always its been great and good luck to you.

Jeff Lacy: Sure thing thank you!
