Most boxing writers predicted a dull, clinch-filled fight, but the fireworks started early and often. The first round saw Mayweather stun Corley with a big right hand that landed right under Corley's jaw. The right hand would continue to land throughout the fight.
In the third round, Corley planted a powerful left to Mayweather's mug, temporarily rocking the undefeated fighter. The fourth round was the best of the fight, and perhaps the year. Both fighters threw power punches at reckless abandon sending the Atlantic City crowd into a frenzy. Mayweather did the most damage and started to take over the battle.
Mayweather put Corley down in the eighth with a combination that was started with a wicked upper-cut. Corley would revisit the canvas in the tenth, a round which Mayweather landed 34 power punches.
Mayweather dominated the final two rounds, and the outcome was never in doubt. The judges scored it 119-107, 119-108, and 118-108 giving Mayweather the unanimous decision. Talkingboxing scored the fight 119-107 for the winner.
Afterwards, Mayweather called out Arturo Gatti, but Gatti's dance card is filled with Leonard Dorin and possibly Paul Spadafora. So, Mayweather might have to settle for a fight with Vivian Harris or Sharmba Mitchell. Last night was the final fight in Mayweather's contract with promoter Bob Arum and HBO. The future looks bright for the suddenly exciting "Pretty Boy". If he wants to take his career to the next level, he should be calling for a major pay-per-view fight with the king of the junior welterweights, Kostya Tszyu. A Mayweather-Tszyu fight would be one of the most exciting match-ups in all of boxing.
