Pretty Boy looks to "Chop, Chop" at New Weight Class

by Jason Herron
"Pretty Boy" Floyd Mayweather Jr. has grown bored of the lightweight division. The Ring Magazine champion is 4-0 against the limited 135 pound competition and has decided to move up in weight and test the deep talent pool at 140 pounds.

First up for Mayweather is DeMarcus "Chop Chop" Corley this Saturday night at the Boardwalk Convention Center in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Corley, (28-2-1 with 16KO's), posted 11 straight victories, until dropping a split decision to Zab Judah, in his previous fight, last July. The flamboyant southpaw from Washington, D.C. will be a strong challenge to Mayweather and his pound-for-pound status as one of the best in the sport.

Mayweather, (31-0 with 21 KO's), is one of the brightest stars in the game. Last November, the Grand Rapids native put on a show in front of his hometown fans, demolishing Phillip Ndou in under seven rounds. The N'dou fight proved Mayweather's usually brittle hands still had the power to finish a strong opponent.

Corley's style may present some trouble for Mayweather. "Chop Chop" is the first quality southpaw opponent Mayweather will face. The Judah-Corley fight was a horrible snore-fest, and Mayweather has been know to fight to the style of his competition. Remember his second dance with Jose Luis Castillo? Not exactly Gatti-Ward material.

Speaking of Arturo Gatti, a Mayweather victory Saturday night could set-up a major pay-per-view fight with the "human highlight reel." Other possible big name opponents at 140 pounds include: Vivian Harris, Sharmba Mitchell, and undisputed champion, Kostya Tszyu.

If Mayweather wants any of these marquee fights, the "Pretty Boy" can not afford to stumble versus the awkward Corley.

Prediction: Everybody is predicting this to be an ugly, boring fight. But, I believe Mayweather sees a huge opportunity to move up the pound-for-pound ladder after Roy Jones, Jr.'s stunning loss last Saturday night. Look for Mayweather to figure out Corley's awkward southpaw style sometime in the middle rounds and batter "Chop Chop" all over the ring. Mayweather by mid-round stoppage.

Jason's prediction record in 2004: 6-2.

The Mayweather-Corley fight can be seen on HBO's World Championship Boxing this Saturday night at 9:45 pm ET. Plus, HBO will replay the shocking rematch between Antonio Tarver and Roy Jones, Jr.
